Clear about the nature of the fight and confident in the victory instigated at Calvary and brought to fulfilment at the second coming of Jesus, we can look practically at tools (or ‘weapons’) that God has given His people to bring that victory to bear in individual circumstances.

The most important aspect of this battle is to stand in the confidence that ultimately Satan knows his final defeat is imminent. The bible speaks with clarity about this. But in the meantime we can stand as people of the cross – sons and daughters of the living God who has made us ‘co-heirs with Christ’, giving us all the victory and authority that Jesus Himself has been granted. This should cause us to have no fear but stand confidently in that identity.

It is a time of unprecedented suffering in the worldwide Church (there were more martyrs in the 20th century than in the previous 19). This is sharply contrasted by unprecedented complacency, compromise and indifference in the Church in Western Europe. We want to know what it means to take up our cross and follow Jesus in the sacrificial lifestyle of a foot washer.

We’ve rightly looked so much since December at who Jesus is, what He’s done, what The Church is, who the Holy Spirit is, and what Holy Scripture and Holy Communion are. What we haven’t done is look at who WE are? The famous TV show of the same name goes to great efforts to uncover people’s genealogy and family history. But we have a spiritual genealogy as sons and daughters that, if understood properly, will give us a solid foundation for the subjects that will follow this teaching.
